A New Chapter - Reflections

There are many reasons to begin a new chapter in life.  Sometimes so many of them come at you all at once that you can't help but pause...and listen...and consider...

Each of those reasons by themselves could send you down its own path.  When you have many that are divergent paths, how do you decide which way to go?

I have found a way to tackle things that I refer to as "percolating."  Here's how it works:  think about it in short bursts, but in different contexts.  Pick a question and roll it around in your mind while you do a routine activity.  For me, walking the dogs is a perfect time.
So pick your question:
  • What is it about that thing grabs your attention?
  • Why is it affecting you?
  • How is it affecting you?
  • What about it would you like to keep?  change?
  • Do you feel compelled to do something now that you've thought about it?
  • What would be your real motivation for action?  Once you acted, then what?
  • Is it worth talking to others about?  For what end?
The questions you can ponder are endless - driven by what matter to you.  Are you searching for purpose and meaning in your life?  Are you seeking comfort and peace?  Is there a problem that needs to be solved that it would help to place yourself in someone else's shoes to analyze your argument?

Over and over in my life I have been served well by practicing this "percolation" technique.

And so I'm doing it again now.  I've over 50.  I have no kids under 18 at home anymore.  I'm beginning to think about retirement options.  The election was a complete disappointment to me, and I'm disgusted with our political system and hypocrisy.  I learned things about myself and others that I wish I had not, but nonetheless have.  Now that I know it, what do I do with it?  about it?  for it?

Now that I'm here, how do I find satisfaction and enjoyment from time spent.  What shall I spend it doing?

I'm going to begin with simplification, down-sizing, non-consumerism.  Eliminating things and the focus on things from my path.  I want to experience, not own.

So one awakening down, and many more to come.

Cheers!
